AbstractThe solar irradiance at extreme ultraviolet (EUV) wavelengths is the primary heat source of the thermosphere. The thermosphere responds to temperature changes expanding or contracting in such a way that the thermospheric density, at a fixed height is highly dependent on the solar EUV flux. The solar radiation is also the responsible for the ionospheric primary ionization and its layering structure. During the minimum of the solar cycle 23/24 the sun had a large number of spotless days as compared with previous periods. During this unusually deep and prolonged solar minimum the solar flux responsible for the thermospheric heating and ionospheric formation was very low. This provided a unique opportunity for the investigation of the thermosphere-ionosphere system under extremely low solar activity. Studies are indicating the need to review some proxies used to represent the solar irradiance in thermosphere-ionosphere models. The low density ionosphere has also provided good conditions for the study of waves propagating in the ionospheric F region.
